NSTE’s Hebrew and Religion School, the campus of the Board of Progressive Judaism (BPJE) on Sydney’s North Shore, provides our students with a rich Jewish education in a stimulating and fun environment. We hope to imbue our students and their families with a sense of pride in their Jewish identity and an awareness of their importance to the future of the Jewish people.

Our students come from a wide variety of Jewish backgrounds, including many from interfaith families. Our school has dedicated teachers who are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and committed to Jewish education and the welfare of their students. Our rabbi provides ongoing educational resources and support to the principal, teachers, students and parents.

Each year group encompasses Jewish History and beliefs, Israel, prayer, mitzvot (the commandments), general Jewish practice, the festivals and Hebrew. Our curriculum caters for all students irrespective of whether they have a solid basis in Jewish studies or no prior Hebrew or Jewish knowledge.

Parental involvement

We encourage our parents to participate with their children in family education and attend adult education classes. Our parents group forms as integral part of the school by assisting with ideas and feedback to the school administration, as well as fundraising and hands-on support for cultural activities.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah

As we believe that both boys and girls should enjoy the same opportunities, our Bnei Mitzvah preparation and ceremonies are egalitarian.

Family service and birthday blessing

Once each term on a Friday night, we hold a family service led by Benny Kaplinski and featuring our youth choir. We invite students to take part in the service and children whose birthdays fall during that term will receive a special blessing from the Rabbi during the service.

Festival and High Holy Day Family services

During the Yamim Nora’im (High Holy Days) and Festivals we conduct services and fun activities for preschool and school-aged children using specially designed prayer books. The children are encouraged to participate in these services.

Year 7              Thursday afternoons 4:30pm – 6:00pm
